In contrast to its name, buckwheat is not a wheat at all - but rather a fruit in the rhubarb family, that the Dutch named “boekweit”, meaning beech-wheat, after its resemblance to the seeds of the beech tree. Well known as a grain, cover crop and bee plant! Even used for pillow fillings, as the hulls allow air to move freely, maintaining a comfortable temperature. Incredibly popular for its use in Japanese soba noodles, making Japan accountable for 96% of American buckwheat exports in 2013.Highly nutritious too, as buckwheat is a good source of protein, fibre B vitamins and minerals and is sought after by those who have an intolerance to gluten, as it is gluten free alternative to cereal grains! In fact, it is used in place of other grains to produce gluten free beer. A source high concentrations of rutin, which helps strengthen vasculature. An infusion made from the flowering tops can combat arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries and veins). Requires little to no maintenance, which was why it was a popular farmed crop, until nitrogen fertilizers came along in the 20th century, making wheat and maize crops more profitable. Height 30-50 inches (75-125cm).
