Comfrey is one of the most important medicinal herbs. It contains allantoin, a hormone-like substance that stimulates cell division, making it valuable for healing wounds, ulcers and broken bones. Tea and poultices of leaves or roots are traditionally used. Due to pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the leaves and roots many authorities now recommend using comfrey only externally applied to the skin.
