Piper cubeba
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal
(Java pepper; Tailed pepper) The pungent spicy taste of the dried berries is something like a cross between black pepper and allspice. The spice is important in African and Moroccan food, particularly in soups, stews and baked goods. It has a long history of use in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for problems of mouth and halitosis, and for loss of voice, fevers and cough. It is a legendary aphrodisiac in India where a paste made from the dried berries is applied to male and female genitals to enhance sexual pleasure. Also important in Chinese and Tibetan medicine for its warming property and its affect on the spleen.
