Delightful curry-scented foliage creates a welcome introduction to this trouble-free shrub. Appropriate for xeriscaping, curryplant grows best in full sun and sandy or loamy soil in a well-drained location. When it rains curryplant releases a pleasing light curry scent. Deer avoid this plant, and it is generally untroubled by other pests or diseases. Its narrow silvery-grey leaves make a striking visual statement in the herb garden. Small papery yellow flowers appear in the summer and make a bright addition to potpourris and dried floral arrangements. To preserve the flowers, cut them before they are fully open and hang them upside down in a cool, shaded location until they are dry. Trim the bush after flowering to maintain shape. It does not impart as much flavour to food as its scent would imply, but a few sprigs can be stuffed into the cavity of a roasting chicken for a change of pace from tarragon or parsley, or added to vegetables or rice; remove before serving. The essential oil is used to enhance fruit flavours in confections and perfumes.
