A deep red gum resin sourced from a variety of trees, but thought to originate from the Indian Ocean island of Socotra. This specific resin is sourced from the fruit scales and leaf sheaths of the Daemomorops Draco tree. Mythology states that the hundred headed dragon, guardian of the Garden of Hesperides, the nymph daughters of Atlas, was killed and “dragon trees” were soon to appear where the blood of the dragon flowed across the land. This resin has a rich history of use as a medicine, breath freshener as well as a source of dye for wool, cosmetics and varnishes by the Greeks, Romans and people of Asia and Middle east. It is slightly astringent, which made it useful to control bleeding and speed up internal and external wounds. Used in Chinese medicine to improve circulation, control hemorrhaging, heavy menstrual bleeding, and diarrhoea when taken internally. Now studied for its anti-coagulation, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, osteogenic activity as well as its ability to control blood sugar levels by enhancing insulin sensitivity. Responsible for the mahogany like stain on Stradivarius violins.
