Planting: should not follow in soils where pepper, eggplant, tobacco, potato, tomato and other Solanaceae were grown previously. Needs 21-30°C to do well. Minimum 16°C soil temperature required for germination In cooler temperate zones. Sow in flats or plugs 8-12 weeks before spring field planting. In warmer zones (e.g. southern U.S.), can be sown direct in field. Cultivation similar to bell peppers, except longer, warmer season required (65-80 days). Easily killed by frost. Excess nitrogen feeding will reduce fruit production. Irrigation necessary in drier areas; can improve yields 6-fold.
Field spacing: 90-130cm between rows x 30-60cm within rows.
Yield: fresh fruit 8-15t/ha, dry fruit 2t/ha (year 1).
Pests: aphid, ground beetle, pepper weevil
