      Sowing rate: 1 kg/ha (direct), 0.1-0.2kg/ha (indirect).   Planting: commercial plantings propagated vegetatively; seed not suitable because of poor oil quality. Root cuttings planted in early spring or fall. Fields must be rotated every 2-3 years to prevent disease buildup.   Field spacing: 40-90cm between rows x 15-45cm within rows.   Yield: peppermint herb oil 35-125kg/ha, fresh herb 10-25t/ha, dried herb 1-3t/ha (years 2-3).   Pests: nematode, aphid   Diseases: puccinia rust, verticillum wilt, leaf spot, sphaceloma spot anthracnose.   Buyers want: peppermint minimum 1-1.2% volatile oil, not more than 10% leaves spotted with puccinia rust, not more than 5% stems, 2% foreign matter or 11% water.  
  Sowing rate: 0.5-1g/1000 plants.   Planting: most cultivars grown from cuttings. Seed material not recommended for pot plant sales.   Plugs to saleable plants: 4 weeks.   Pests: whitefly, spider mite, aphid, mealybug   Diseases: rust.
