Possible Bladder infection in a Boerboel

I have a 6 year old BoerBoel that has had repeated bouts of bleeding from his genitals. The penis and sheath don’t appear to have any cuts or abrasions and he has been diagnosed by our 1st vet with balanoposthitis and apparently that was an incorrect diagnosis according to our most recent vet. We took him to the vet for the bleeding and were told he had been suffering from a bladder infection and the anti-biotics should cure it but now it’s back about 2 mos later. I don’t want to keep giving him endless antibiotics and would like to know what I can do to improve his urinary/bladder health. They also checked his prostate which was normal.

Did either of your veterinarians do a urinalysis and blood screen? Were any bacterial cultures taken from the penile-preputial area? Is there any accompanying discharge or urinary incontinence? Is there any inflammation in the area in question? Has this condition affected your dog’s interest in food or activity? There are a number of herbs that act as anti-haemorrhagics but if the symptoms you describe are indicative of an underlying problem, then just stopping the bleeding is of minimal use. I would suggest that you seek a consultation with a qualified professional in your area who has experience with both animals and herbs. Such a person may be found through the Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association (www.vbma.org). In a case such as this, it would be important to have a one-on-one relationship with a practitioner who can examine your dog and take a full case history.
