My husband is scheduled for bypass surgery on both legs. He has blockage in the arteries that could not be treated by angioplasty. After surgery is there an herb to help keep his arteries clear? I read that a mixture of apple cider vinegar is helpful for a number of ailments. He is in perfect health except for this problem. Also suggest diet for optimal health.

I don’t know the effects of apple cider vinegar on the arteries.

We are not licensed practitioners, so offer the following for your information and research only.

A diet to help keep the blood vessels clear and support the circulation would exclude all animal fats, dairy products, fried foods, eggs, alcohol, shellfish and sugar. These can be replaced with fish, which has a positive influence on cholesterol, chicken, soy products and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Garlic and onions have a positive effect on cholesterol and the heart. There are some excellent books that can help you with dietary decisions, including Dr. Dean Ornish’s "Eat More, Weigh Less" (Harper Collins Publishers), which describes the basic philosophy behind a fat free diet and includes hundreds of delicious recipes. Another helpful book is Dr. Dean Ornish’s "Program for Reversing Heart Disease".

Herbs which can help are Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacanthoides), which supports the heart and Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) which dilates peripheral blood vessels to increase circulation. Daniel Mowrey in "Proven Herbal Blends) available at Richters) suggests a combination of apple pectin, Hawthorn Berries, Plantain (Plantago ovata), Fenugreek (Trigonella Foenum-graecum), Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) and Cayenne (Capsicum annum) to help lower cholesterol and prevent the deposition of dietary cholesterol on the arterial walls.
