Can lavender oil help control genital herpes?

Anne McIntyre in "The Complete Woman’s Herbal" (Henry Holt publishers) suggests that a dilute lavender lotion made of 10 drops of the essential oil, 5 ml (one teaspoon) of lavender tincture and 15 ml (one tablespoon) of water, may be dabbed onto the herpes blisters to speed healing, soothe pain and discourage secondary infection.
