I was told that there are herbs that can bring on a menstrual period. Are you aware of any and if so, can you send me this information.

The reason I’m asking is because I want to get pregnant. For my last child the Dr. gave me provera to bring on a period and then clomid. I wanted to try a natural method before I have to resort back to drugs.

Reasons for missed periods include an imbalance of hormones due to stress, poor nutrition, weight abnormality and taking birth control pills. The cause must be examined to ensure the good health of mother and baby and proper nutrition to the reproductive organs.

Amanda McQuade Crawford in "Herbal Remedies for Women" (Prima Publishing) offers the following formula to relax with herbal nervines, build with nutritives, balance with tonics for the reproductive system and warm or energize with circulatory normalizers:

* Nettle leaf (Urtica dioica): 1-1/2 ounces

* Passionflower leaf (Passiflora incarnata): 2 ounces

* Angelica root (Angelica archangelica): 2 ounces

* Yarrow leaf and flower (Achillea millefolium): 2 ounces

* Rose hips (Rosa canina): 2 - 4 ounces, to taste

* Ginger root (Zingeber officinale): 1/2 ounce, to taste

Mix and store in a clean glass jar.

Pour 3 cups of boiling water over one ounce of the herb mixture in a teapot or glass container. Steep for 15 minutes. Drink 1/2 to 1 cup of tea two to three times a day for 10 days.

Vitex agnus-castus (chasteberry) regulates hormones from the pituitary gland, and may produce a similar effect in balancing hormones to the drugs you were using before your last pregnancy. Amanda McQuade Crawford specifically recommends it for hormone imbalance following the use of synthetic hormones such as birth control pills. She recommends adding two ounces to the above herbal mix and drinking it as described for a minimum of three months.
