Hiccups

My dad has hiccups constantly.  What can be used?

Constant hiccups can be a sign of serious disease.  It is important that your father consult with a medical practitioner to rule out a constriction of the oesophagus, brain tumour and viral encephalitis.

The following are methods that work for fellow herbalists:

- Drink a glass of water while someone firmly pulls down on your earlobes.

- Hold a small paper bag, scrunched up at the opening, over the nose and mouth. Hold tightly in place so that no fresh air enters the bag, and breathe normally. The carbon dioxide cures the hiccups in a minute or two.

- Eat a small bowl of yogurt, highly salted - as salty as you can stand it.

- Drink a glass or bottle of water backwards, meaning put your mouth on the rim on the side opposite the side that you would normally drink from, and lean forward, compressing the diaphragm, as you drink. Drink as much of the water as possible.

- Slowly drink a full glass of water, without taking a breath and swallowing at least ten times.

- Hold the breath for as long as possible.
