I have a teenage daughter who gets very nervous when she has a clarinet test. She said that she is so nervous that she shakes uncontrollably and almost freaks out. Is there anything that she can take that will calm her nerves. If so does she need to continually take it or just the day of the test. She also gets uptight and overwhelmed with her school work and semester test. Will the same remedy help?

A common remedy for this type of nervousness is the Bach Flower "Rescue Remedy". It can be taken a couple of times before the event, once an hour or two before, and again, immediately before.

Other calming teas or tinctures are skullcap, passionflower and lemon balm. You can combine these dry herbs and use one teaspoon if the dried mixture in a cup of boiling water, covered and steeped for 15 minutes. You may be able to find a combination of these herbs in tea bags at a health food store. If your daughter doesnīt like herbal teas, the tinctures are very effective. The dose will vary depending on the product, but is usually a teaspoon of the tincture in a little water.

If these donīt work for your daughter, you can try valerian tincture, an excellent natural relaxant to the nervous system. It works very well for most people, though the taste is not popular. It relaxes without sedating.
