What herbs can I purchase from you to stop hair loss and promote hair growth? I am 52 years old and almost finished with menopause and under a lot of stress.

We have answered similar questions previously. Please search the Q&A section on Richter’s web page, www.richters.com by choosing "Q&A" from the main page, then entering the word "hair loss" for the search. You can find additional information by searching for "alopecia". These items address dietary needs as well as herbs that can help.

The herbs mentioned include nettles, burdock, and horsetail to provide minerals, and prickly ash and rosemary to support blood circulation to the head. These are all available from Richters in dried form to make teas, or as fluid extracts.

Because hormone changes and stress are underlying causes of hair loss, these should be addressed first. See other items in our "Q&A’ section about stress. In addition to the use of herbs, addressing stress requires an understanding the causes of your stress, daily physical exercise and exercises specifically to reduce stress like breathing exercises, yoga and tai chi.

In menopause, hormonal changes can be slowed, limiting menopausal side effects, with herbs mentioned in our Q&A items on menopause. I recommend a strong nettle tea, made by placing 1/3 cup dried nettles in a one quart/liter jar, covering with boiling water and allowing it to sit for 4 hours or overnight. Stain and drink 2 cups daily, storing the remaining tea in the fridge. This addresses hormonal changes, menopausal needs for minerals and needs of the hair for minerals and circulation support.
