Brewer’s Yeast for Diabetes?
Question from: Name not given
Posted on: May 14, 2005

I am 52 years old. I heard that brewer’s yeast is good for the diabetes. Can you give me a little more information on this herb please? I know that you are not a medical doctor but maybe you can help me.

Brewer’s yeast, sometimes called nutritional yeast, is not a herb. Brewers yeast is a byproduct of the brewing industry. It is grown on hops, grain and malt. It is sometimes recommended for diabetes because it contains the minerals necessary for sugar metabolism.

Problems with brewers yeast include the risk of promoting or exacerbating candida, and loss of calcium from the body due to the yeast’s high phosphorous content. Some manufacturers of brewer’s yeast add calcium to their product. Otherwise, a calcium supplement is recommended to offset the calcium loss.
