What type of herbs can be recommended for nightmares and anxiety?

Thomas Bartram, in "Bartram’s Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine" (available at Richters) says that nightmares can be caused by excessive mental activity during the day, a heavy meal late in the evening, indigestion, or obstruction of free blood return from the brain. Remedies listed by Bartram include: marjoram tea; skullcap tea with honey and a pinch of cayenne on retiring; aromatherapy: inhalation or anointing the forehead with oil of frankincense; nightly footbath; practice relaxation at night before falling asleep.
