My little sister has been diagnosed with what doctors have called three large masses on her pancreas. The problem is she has had them for over three months. It started with two, they pumped her full of antibiotics and pain medication. they released her from the hospital a week later.

We are three months into the problem and she has had no relief. She went back for her latest appointment. Tests show she has now developed a third mass. Her stomach (as well as her pancreas) is swollen severely. Her pain keeps her from living a normal life. To keep the recommended low calorie low fat diet down would be a miracle in itself. She’s only 29 has 2 boys and now after waiting for three months she went back to her physician yesterday. Only for them to tell her they arent sure if the masses are filled with infection or what. But they may need to remove the pancreas. Is there anything you can recommend? I have searched my herb book as well as the web. and nothing on this condition.

There is some information on pancreatic masses on the internet. Use the google search engine at www.google.com and enter the words pancreas and mass for the search.

For pancreatic infection, Thomas Bartram, in "Bartram’s Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine" (available at Richters) recommends goldenseal and licorice, along with a diet high in citrus fruits, and supplements of vitamin C, methionine and selenium to mop up free radicals. Bartram says: "Without the supplements toxins strike the pancreas, leading to severe pain. In this way they can be used as an alternative to pain killers".
