Need help to understand triggers for this terrible disorder. Also diet suggestions and natural remedies.

Prurigo nodularis is a skin condition whereby hard crusty lumps form on the skin that itches intensely. The cause is unknown, however, the more one itches the more they form.

From a holistic stand point skin conditions are viewed as an elimination issue. The body has 4 main routes of elimination - lungs, kidneys, bowels and skin. When one or more of these routes are compromised, the other routes need to take up the extra work load and can often become over loaded. The symptoms of the skin as an elimination route being over loaded are weird and quirky rashes, spots, etc.

Furthermore, itching is a sign of over heated blood and internal irritation by a number of ancient healing systems. As such, cooling and soothing remedies are indicated both internally and externally. Herbs such as plantain leaf, red clover, violet leaf, chickweed and marshmallow root made into a topical salve as well as taken internally as a tea is ideal. A strong infusion of nettle tea drank 3 times daily would also help to reduce the body’s hyper response to the itching and nourish the system as well.

An anti-inflammatory diet that includes the elimination of bad fats (animals fed a corn and soy diet and hydrogenate oils) and the addition of lots of good fat (flax seed oil, fish oils, nut and seed oils) is important. Bitter herbs such as dandeliion, yellowdock, burdock, barberry or gentian taken before meals will help to stimulate the bowels more as an elimination route. Drinking the above mentioned tea and lots of water with a little lemon juice added to it will help to keep the kidneys as an elimination route open and working well. Exercise and deep breathing with help to keep the lungs working and the elimination via the lungs open.
