APR 22 TRIALS, TRIBULATIONS AND TRIUMPHS OF A TEENAGE TOMATO GARDENER

With Emma Biggs, gardener and co-author of Grow Gardeners

Emma Biggs is a 12-year-old who knows a lot about growing tomatoes in a small space She’ll talk about how to fit lots of tomatoes into a small space, how to prune and train them, and how to save seeds. Emma has grown over 100 varieties, and will share some of her favourite tips. 2-3pm

Hops is the 2018 Herb of the Year — and it’s not just because of the beer! Brewmaster Doug Warren has been using this bitter, aromatic herb for three decades. He will discuss the history, cultivation, varieties and varied uses of this noble flower. 2-3pm

Pat Crocker, author of 18 cookbooks, will describe a two-step approach to health by cleansing and toning the body using herbs that increase energy, boost immunity, enhance memory, ease digestion, and promote wellness. Pat will discuss 6 tonic herbs you can grow, and how to make and use teas, tinctures, and syrups for elixirs. 2-3pm

SEP 16 USE AND SAVOUR YOUR HERBAL BOUNTY

With Koidu Sulev, Richters Herbs

As autumn nears it is time to harvest and preserve your culinary and medicinal herbs. Richters herb expert Koidu Sulev will explain which herbs are best suited for drying and for freezing, and how to handle and store them properly. You will also learn how easy it is to make your own oils and vinegars and herb blends. 2-3pm

SEP 23 HELPING THE BEES IN AUTUMN

With Karen McKenna, beekeeper, apitherapist and environmentalist

We can help our native bees by planting herbs this autumn that will provide pollen and nectar all next season. Beekeeper and educator Karen McKenna will discuss the best hardy herbs to plant for bees and other pollinators. She will also discuss how to make honey infusions for taste and health, including lavender-infused honey. 2-3pm

SEP 30 HERBS FOR BRAIN HEALTH, COGNITION AND MEMORY

With Monika Ghent, western traditional herbalist and plant spirit medicine healer.

A decline in memory and cognitive function need NOT be inevitable. There are many indigenous or common herbs that you can grow that can boost brain health. Monika Ghent will introduce you to these brain-supporting herbs, their properties and how to use them. 2-3pm
