Spanish Lavender
Lavandula dentata
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 8-9)
(French lavender) Light purple flowers and light purple large bracts near top of inflorescence and distinctive indented leaves. Can tolerate more heat than the English variety and therefore a preferred choice for hot climates. Has a strong resinous odor and may not be the most suitable for culinary use, but it makes a beautiful fragrant border, container plant or addition to a rock garden. Like any other variety, Spanish Lavender must be located in full sun and planted in well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as it is prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. After the second year of growth, begin pruning once or twice a year, cutting back a third of its foliage. This will help maintain its shape, leaf and flower production as well as prevent woodiness. Height 10-24 inches.
