Saffron is the world’s costliest spice, harvested from the stigmas of the saffron flower! Each bulb will produce one flower, and each flower produces three stigmas. With this in mind, it is not hard to believe the expensive price, as It takes the stigmas of 150,000 flowers to make one kilogram of spice. That being said, it multiplies rapidly and after a few years, you will have many more than what you started with! It is quite easy to grow in the garden, planted in full sun in well drained soil 3-5 inches deep in fall; but in regions colder than zone 5, winter indoors in a cool place. Six plants will produce enough spice for one recipe. Lovely lavender blossoms appear in fall.
