Etruscan Santolina
Santolina etrusca
Uses: Medicinal/Aromatic Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 6-9)
When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
(Canfora) A lovely aromatic santolina with creamy white flowers from the provinces of Northern Latium, Tuscany and Umbria of central Italy. Traditionally the dried sprigs are placed in wardrobes and linen closets to keep away moths, and in cat and dog litters to keep away fleas. On the eve of the Feast of St. John the Baptist (June 24) it is tradition to prepare a perfumed water with the leaves to wash one‘s face -- as a form of spiritual cleansing. Interestingly the locals will tell you that this wash helps to smooth the skin. Also used in herbal tobacco and in potpourri.
