All parts of this West African tree possess potent alkaloids, as much as 5-10% by weight in the root bark. One of the alkaloids, voacangine is used to manufacture ibogaine, a drug that has shown remarkable potential for the treatment of addiction. Studies have shown that the drug is remarkably effective for alcohol and opioid addiction when administered in clinical settings. In Africa the plant is used for diarrhea, ulcers, postpartum pain, hernia, and as a tonic for fatigue and to increase endurance. It also has magical and religious uses on account of its psychoactive effects at higher doses. Will grow in containers in a greenhouse setting.
