    Sowing rate: 2-4kg/hectare.   Planting: seeds require stratification, 1-2 months warm, then 1-2 months cold, then sow in spring. Common nursery practice is to sow without stratification in outdoor seed beds in fall. Seedlings shaded for 2-3 years and fertilized with manure. Seedlings transplanted to permanent location when 7-8 years old. Trees kept short (2m) and spaced close (2-3m) in commercial plantations for medicinal leaf production; otherwise allowed to grow higher and spaced further for seed production. Slow growing. Leaves harvested in early fall as they begin to turn yellow; dried in sun. Fruits harvested late fall, seeds cleaned and roasted.   Field spacing: 3-5m apart (2-3m within rows for leaf production).   Yield: no data (leaf years 8-50, seed years 20-50).   Pests: few problems   Diseases: tolerates pollution.  
  Sowing rate: 2-4kg/1000 plants.   Planting: stratify seed warm (1-2 months) followed by cold (1-2 months). Sow in deep plugs. Keep lightly shaded.   Seeds to finished plugs: 12 weeks to 1 year.   Plugs to saleable plants: 8 weeks (10cm pots), 2-5 years (larger plants).   Pests: whitefly   Diseases: few problems.
