Ear Mites in Dogs Answered by: Conrad Richter Question from: Lorna Freudiger Posted on: September 24, 2004
I have a Shar-Pei aged four months. Is there a herb or a herbal powder I could bath him with to get rid of the mites?
Cats and dogs commonly get ear mites. Ear mites are actually tiny crabs that bite causing itching and scratching and eventually infection if not treated.
Tea tree oil is recommended for ear mites in dogs (but not in cats). Tea tree oil is available from Richters. Dilute 10 drops tea tree oil in one tablespoon of olive oil. Using a small eyedropper squirt one dropperful in each ear. Massage the ear for a minute or so that the dog does not shake the oil out. Once the oil reaches the ear canal it will work its magic to kill the tiny crabs, bacteria and fungi. Administer the oil this way twice daily for a week.
