I have a thoroughbred mare who has come down with a nasal infections. After numerous vet visits, x-rays, scope, anitibiotics etc we think it is sinusitus and just cannot seem to get rid of it..she has now had it for the 4th time. I would like to try her on some herbal products but I need some guidence as I currently know very little of herbs. Although a few herbs that I hear may be good for these types of problems are Buchu, Fenugreek, Echinacaea, Horseradish, Garlic, Golden Seal, Comfrey, Mullein, rosehips but I am not sure on the details of these herbs e.g what amount to give, if any of them conflict with others etc. I have already started her on the garlic. Would you know of any good websites, books that could explain these herbs in more detail or even an equine herbalist that I could contact?

The first question to ask is: "What is causing the sinusitis?" Is it due to the air quality in your area, seasonal pollens, other allergies? Is her immune system at an optimum level, a reduced state or over-acting? Is she receiving the best nutrition possible? Is she subject to stress? All of these answers will have an impact on her ability to deal with the cause of the sinusitis as well as her chances of overcoming it. Herbs to start with include: Garlic/Allium sativum (6-8 crushed cloves per day), Boneset/Eupatorium perfoliatum (one handful of the dried herb per day) and Echinacea/Echinacea pupurea (10-20 grams of cut/sifted root per day on a 2 weeks on, one week off schedule). As for equine herbalists, you could try the "Member Directory" at www.vbma.org They may have someone listed who can help you.
