Hello, I am a beginner when it comes to cooking with herbs. I basically only know salt and pepper and maybe a bell pepper and some onion. Is there a list of herbs with a description of how to use them, what foods to put them in? I don’t mean exotic foods but everyday home cooking kind of foods?

The best way to learn how to cook with fresh herbs is to get good recipes, follow the amounts given and taste what herbs are used with what foods. It’s difficult to just play around adding herbs. You can go to the Herb Directory on my web site for a list of herbs and foods they go with. It is general and does not give amounts. www.yvonnetremblay.com Also try cookbooks (library) and magazines often have recipes using fresh herbs. You can also try substituting dried herbs in recipes with about 3 times as much chopped fresh herbs...just add them at the end of the cooking to keep their fresh flavour. Start with one or two herbs you really like first then add on a new one. Richter’s sells copies of my book Thyme in the Kitchen -- Cooking with Fresh Herbs. The recipes are easy plus there is a lot of other information on growing, freezing, drying herbs as well as how to make herb butters, vinegars, etc. (view on my web site) to get you started. Best of luck!
