Pruning the Chicago Fig Tree

I have 2 fig trees from Richter’s. One is about 5 feet tall and has no figs-I have had it for 3 years. The other one I got last year and have kept it confined to a small pot therefore it about 1 1/2 feet tall and has had some figs. Can I prune the tall fig? How do I get it to bear figs? Can I root the cuttings? For the shorter fig plant, is keeping it pot bound the answer to getting figs? Should it be in a bigger pot?
Yes, you can prune it, but remember figs form at the growing tips of the plant. To get it to bear, put it outside in the summer and over the course of two weeks move it from shade to full sun. Keep the pot on the small side. The cuttings are hard to root, but that is how we propagate the plants and get true-to-type plants. Only put it into a bigger pot when the plant gets just too pot-bound. If you fertilize use a fertilizer with the last number the highest such as 7-10-20. | | |
