I have been diagnosed with Gastrointestinal Esophageal Reflux Disease. The medications prescribed have caused some adverse reactions, I am extremely sensitive to medications, most doctors don’t believe me so I am forced to go out on my own to find a cure. I would rather deal with severe heartburn and gas than to be dizzy, tired and nauseous. Do you know of any herbal remedies that can control stomach acid?

Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease is a backward flow from the esophagus to the mouth. It can be caused by a hiatus hernia, by acid indigestion possibly resulting from an ulcer or gall bladder disorder, or from taking antacids, aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs . The underlying cause should be treated.

Frequent drinking of Chamomile tea will aid digestion and decrease stomach acidity. Slippery Elm Powder provides a long lasting barrier against acid, allowing the intestinal tract to heal. Slippery Elm powder can be obtained at a health food store. It should be taken at least three times a day by mixing one teaspoon in a bit of water or mashed in a banana.

Meadowsweet is a herbal antacid. One to two teaspoons to a cup of boiling water.

Foods that will aggravate are alcohol and hot or spicy food. Fatty foods such as meat and dairy could increase the stomach acidity. You can try replacing dairy products with soy products.
