Cystic Fibrosis

I have a child with Cystic Fibrosis. Am interested in obtaining information about herbs that can help.

Thomas Bartram, in "Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine" (available at Richters) states the following: Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition in children, with excess secretion from the mucous glands. Thick mucous in the lungs may cause breathing distress; in the liver it may block ducts and inhibit function. Liver, pancreatic and salivary glands may be involved. Selenium and Vitamin E levels are low and supplementation is advised. Vitamin supplements A, B-complex, C and D are also advised.

Because it involves missing enzymes, a hard look at diet is usually rewarding. Some individuals may lack the enzymes to break down wheat, and wheat should be avoided. Because gluten increases mucous production, oats, wheat, rye and barley should be avoided. Rice is a good alternative. Natural yoghurt contains essential digestive bacteria. Papaya assists digestion.

To avoid infection, herbal antibiotics such as Echinacea, Wild Yam or Myrrh may be used.

To liquefy mucous, making it easier to eliminate, teas of Hyssop, White Horehound, Gotu Kola or Alfalfa may be taken. A tincture of Dandelion supports the liver and pancreas.
