My brother has asthma and is taking pulmicort and on emergencies only albuterol. I was wondering what herbs(s) have been most effective for healing asthma. I was hoping that you could also hoping you could tell me the instructions for making the remedies. Creams would be nice.

Asthma is usually caused by food allergies, and the only effective way of healing asthma is by eliminating foods from the diet that are causing the allergic reaction. The most common food allergy is dairy products. Changing the diet to one that is high in fresh fruit and vegetables, eliminating all sugars and food additives and minimizing meat products will support the immune system to decrease the allergic response. Herbs are used to improve immunity, digestion and other symptoms while the diet changes are taking effect.

You will find information on our website at http://www.richters.com. Home remedies suggested in "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies" by Vasant Lad (Three Rivers Press publishers) are:

- 1/2 teaspoon each ginger & licorice steeped for 10 minutes in 1 cup boiling water, as a tea for prevention

- 1/4 teaspoon each black pepper, ground mustard seed steeped 10 minutes in hot water, then add 1-2 teaspoons honey; drink every 15 minutes or sip throughout the day

- 1/4 cup onion juice with one teaspoon honey and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper: for immeiate relief of asthma, relief from congestion and breathlessness

Note that these remedies give adult dosages.
