Do you recommend any herbs or holistic medicines for help with a Hyatial Hernia? I am currently taking Propulsid or Cisapride for this condition and it has been taken off the market. HELP!

Hiatus hernia is a condition where part of the stomach bulges up through the diaphram at the opening for the oesophagus. It can cause heartburn, acid reflux and abdominal distention.

It is helpful to decrease acid-forming foods, especially meat and dairy products. Food combining, that is, eating proteins (meat and fish) in separate meals from starches (e.g. potatoes, breads and pasta) is helpful in improving digestion, to avoid acid formation.

Slippery elm powder is helpful in protecting the intestinal lining from acid: one teaspoon of powder mixed with water, taken 4 times a day. It is especially important to take slippery elm before bedtime, to protect the intestinal lining during the night.

Raising the top part of your bed, by putting bricks under the bed legs at the head of your bed, helps to keep the acid flow from rising.
