Melilot and Other Herbs to Help Blood Clots

My mother recently had knee replacement surgery and ended up with a blood clot as a byproduct of the surgical procedure (she is taking Coumadin, dosages ranging from 2 mg once a day to 7.5 mg once a day). She is 69 years young and has high blood pressure (takes Adalat daily), and had a mild ulcer a number of years ago (can’t take aspirin). She also has to deal with a mildly high Cholesterol level. According to "The Herb Book" by John B. Lust, N.D., D.B.M., published by Bantam Books, the only herb listed as beneficial for blood clots is Yellow and White Melilot. I am reluctant to prescribe any herbal treatment to help my mother’s blood clot situation without professional advice, considering the possible side effects of the Melilot lot if you’ll pardon the pun, hence the reason for this e-mail. What herbs can I use safely to help my mother get rid of the blood clot?

Melilot, Sweet Clover, contains coumarin derivatives, and is used for the same purposes as the drug Coumadin. It is not safe to take any other blood-thinning agents while on Coumadin. Garlic, Ginkgo and Vitamin E are on the list of agents that may thin the blood.

Hawthorn, Ginger, Turmeric and Blueberries are herbs that you can look into for help with blood clots and high blood pressure.
