Adenovirus Ear Infection
Answered by: Susan Eagles
Question from

In June, my husband, Dan, was hospitalized for an ear infection that would not respond to antibiotics until he was put on IV drip antibiotics in the hospital. From there on things went from bad to worse - he ended up with the adenovirus, then pneumonia in all five lobes. He was 27 days in the hospital and It took them two weeks to diagnose the adenovirus. By then the stress of the pneumonia had taken its toll on his heart. He’s had well-controlled diabetes for ten years but never a lung problem nor a heart problem prior to this. He was put on 12 different medications and went into congestive heart failure and low hemoglobin count that required a blood transfusion - his doctor said he did not expect to see him leave the hospital. After three and a half months on oxygen, Dan was able to go off it - that was three days ago. However, he still requires the help of a physical therapist to regain his strength.

I am totally convinced there has to be a better way to take care of an ear infection!!

Now my 17-year-old daughter has an ear infection. Can you advise me of any antiviral herbs in the event that this, too, could be adenovirus since it is contagious?

Sure would appreciate any counsel you may have to give.

Adenoviruses commonly cause upper respiratory infection, conjunctivitis, ear infection and stomach ‘flu. It spreads easily by contact and from cough droplets. Ensure frequent hand washing.

Support your daughter’s immune system with a diet that is high in fresh fruit and vegetables. She should avoid sugar because it has a negative effect on the immune system.
