What is bitter orange?

Bitter orange is the fruit peel of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium). It is best known as a digestive tonic. In Chinese medicine its main function is to break up stagnant qi (chi) energy in the body. For example, in Chinese herbal medicine, the herb is used to relieve constipation, expel phlegm, and calm the nerves. It useful for insomnia and shock.
