The first thing to do is get your thyroid check out as it is the thyroid gland that sets ones metabolism rate. There are several causes of hyper acting thyroid but this needs to be ruled out first. You can do a home test called a basal body temperature reading to get an idea of how your thyroid is function, but it would also be a good idea to get a blood test from your doctor as well.

To check you basal body temperature, you will need a thermometer that reads to the at least 1 decimal point. Take your temperature first thing in the morning as soon as you wake up, so prior to lying around reading, relaxing or getting up to even urinate and then go back to bed. Note the reading and repeat each morning for a few weeks. A normal and healthy body temperature will reveal a result of 36.7 degrees C. If there is too much deviation consistently from this, i.e. more than 0.3 degrees C then it should be questioned.

The next place after the thyroid has been ruled out is to look to digestion absorption. If the digestive system is not absorbing what you eat then difficulty gaining and maintaining a healthy weight occurs. Any inflammatory bowel issues can be responsible for this as can excessive antibiotic use and food sensitivities.
